The origins of the vine are not certain, while the connection to the city of Troy is certain. From the legend that has it that Diomedes landed on the shores of Gargano, bringing vine shoots that found their natural habitat here, to Frederick II of Swabia who enjoyed tasting the "full-bodied wine of Troy," to the Marquises D'Avalos who purchased the city in 1533 and, having noticed the absolute quality and suitability of the surrounding lands, significantly increased the cultivation of this grape. For a long time, it was a grape variety relegated to a secondary role, that of strengthening weaker wines with its remarkable body and color. Only recently has it begun to receive the right recognition because it has been demonstrated that when vinified in purity, wines of absolute value are obtained.
