Il Pecorino is a white wine whose paternity is disputed between the regions of Marche and Abruzzo. The "Pecorino" grape has been cultivated since ancient times, and its origin is lost in history. There are many hypotheses about the origin of the name and its meaning, more or less widely accepted, and here are the most common ones:
-
Hypothesis of the connection with Pecorino cheese: One theory suggests that the name "Pecorino" may have been given to this wine because of the similarities between it and the famous "Pecorino" cheese. Specifically, this hypothesis is based on some resemblances between the cheese and the wine made from "Pecorino" grapes.
-
Hypothesis of "gourmet sheep": Another theory suggests that the name "Pecorino" was given to this grape variety because the departure for transhumance (the seasonal migration of flocks with their shepherds) coincided with the ripening period of these grapes, and the sheep, guided by the shepherds, were attracted to the sweet clusters.
-
Hypothesis of the shape of a sheep's head: Another hypothesis about the origin of the name "Pecorino" attributes its meaning to the "elongated" shape of the clusters of the homonymous grape. The clusters of the "Pecorino" grape variety are indeed characterized by a central, more massive body and two lateral projections. This cluster formation, as can be seen from the image, seems to resemble the shape of a sheep's head.
