The history of Primitivo is lost in the mists of time. Most likely brought to Puglia from the other side of the Adriatic by the Illyrians, a people from the Balkan region dedicated to vine cultivation, it began to be traded throughout the Mediterranean by the ancient Phoenicians, who frequented our coasts. In the United States of America, it is cultivated under the name Zinfandel, primarily in California, where it is one of the most widespread and appreciated red grape varieties. The name "Primitivo" derives from the characteristic early ripening of the grape, compared to other varieties found in Puglia. Its naturally high alcohol content, intense color, and robust structure made it perfect for fortifying weak French and Northern European wines.
Cluster: conical or cylindrical, compact, often with the presence of a secondary cluster and a very short peduncle. Berry: spherical, flattened, with a thick bloom, blue in color with gray or greenish-blue nuances. The navel mark is clearly visible on the lower part. The vines are still cultivated in the bush-trained system, following the ancient method of viticulture used by the ancient Greeks. The wine has an intense red color. On the nose, it is characterized by aromas of red fruits and wild berries, accompanied by a pleasant spicy undertone. On the palate, it is rich, warm, deep, with enveloping fruity flavors, good tannic structure, and balanced freshness. It exhibits a long-lasting finish.
